Welcome Readers

Welcome readers,
My name is Betty and I am about to finish up a class of English 098 at Everett Community College. I moved from Atlanta GA, about a year and a half ago because of my husband job promotion. Before my arrival here in WA, I had just finished a medical asst program and received my Diploma as a medical asst. Although this change was every unexpected for me, I tried to adapt to the big change. This was nothing close to looking like Georgia. The rainy, cloudy, and foggy days were all a new global change to me. The view of mountains and snow fallen was like having a white Christmas for the first time. I planned to search for a job quickly so that could keep me busy from becoming depressed. After searching for jobsites, scheduling interviews, and filling out applications my hard work had soon come to an end. I was offered a couple of jobs as a Medical Asst and had to make a decision that would soon change my life for the best. Than after thinking of the choice that i had to make, I decided to work for a family practice clinic in Marysville WA.

After a year dedicating most my time to sick patients, I decide to follow my career as a RN. Now with that said, I am determined to finish what I’ve already started. Even if it means dealing with the messed up whether, I am devoted to accomplish it. However, after becoming a student of Shen p I knew I would soon run into to some difficulty times. The last time I had written an essay was about 4 years ago. Just thinking about punctuation placements was driving me crazy. I haven’t sat in a class room in a very long time. I was a bit shy the first day of class, but than try to make an effort to talk to other classmates. After receiving my homework or any other assignments I was heading down hills. So I was more determined than ever to receive a better grade. Although I struggle through the grammar, commas, and my word choice “you”, the best is that I have improved my skills at English.

However this has helped my ability to understand, discuss, and develop my writing skills. It has Also change the ability to reword my sentences structure. Threw out the class we were told to read two books, which were Three Cups of Tea and the Absolute True Diary of a Part – Time Indian. Although, I struggle a bit to cope and understand the words that were in the first book Three Cups Of Tea it was an amazing book. I had to look up many words to understand what the Author was talking about. Some words were really difficult to understand until my dictionary came in handy. After starting the second book of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian I learn to love what junior experience throughout his life and how he was influenced threw him. I really loved this book. It was more my kind of level and I finished the book within a few hours.

Even though I had many assignments throughout the week and balancing my job as well, I decide to volunteer at Grandview in Everett WA. Throughout my service learning, I seek to help a child in need of math, reading, and doing crafts. Once it was clear to me, I was in a war zone together with poverty. Many kids ran up and down to seek a pencil so they could finish their homework with us volunteers. Although some kids were not familiar with the change some tried to respect it. To many kids it was donut shop, but to others it was a place for learning, getting help, and having some fun. My own personal experience at the service learning bad or good were helping me to write them down on paper. When we were told to write a paragraph about poverty, it was clear to me that my service learning help me out in that situation. My service learning has helped me to make a little more time for children in these crises in need of help.

After all the hard work I have gain with this class, I have decided to pick four pieces for you to look at. While reviewing, you will see good grammar, commas and corrections of punctuation placements. These four pieces will show many things that have taught me to be a better writer. All that will include the ability to write effectively and be able to do critical thinking, and analysis. I hope you enjoy reading my pieces that i have in store for you. Although it was hard for be at first, I enjoyed being in this class. I admit the teacher was a bit hard on me, but it was only for my own good. This class has taught me many skills to go forward in my career and i hope you enjoy reading the piece I have for you so take a chill pill and relax.

Introduction To Definition Essay

For my major writing assignment, I decide to choose the definition essay.
My chosen piece is the second major writing assignment that I did on May 05, 2010. Here I define the word dignity where my paper describes what I believe it is and the understanding of a good effective definition essay is all about. Throughout the paper I gave my own point of view and also link it to the book we were reading at the moment. As I read I sought dignifying actions in the book so I provided at this excellent quote “ I told him truthfully that I had never seen Dr Greg take a drink, and that he was a married man, who respected his wife and children and would never eve-tease any Balti girls.” However, I decide to pick this because there are so many different meaning for one word in today’s sociality. This has helped me to improve my ability to develop as a writer and to stop using the word “you” but now I have accomplished to leave 2nd person behind. Although there were many things to learn about writing, I have gain much by my peer response group, as well as drafting, and revision of my essay.

What it Means "Dignity"

Many have heard the word dignity but what does it really mean? Some people might say dignity is self- respect, but I personally think it can be an appearance and how we carry ourselves as a person. Dignity is described in many different meanings. Some people may not even know how many meaning there truly are for the word dignity. In fact, it can be how people over all express themselves. Therefore, human dignity can be respect for oneself as well as other people. Although this is a great thing in someone’s life; it really shows how we are as a person, and our personality. The word “Dignity and respect” are more than just words. They are attitudes, or expressions, of how someone regards another person. This is the essence of how we treat each other.

However, respect is a very important value for one’s life and can be part of an individual dignity. Many people have said that respect is an act, but in reality respect comes in many different forms. It’s how we interact with others and how we represent ourselves as a person. Although Millions of people may think that respect is treating one another with kindness, I believe respect goes far beyond what others may think it really is. Defining self respect in my own words mean respecting myself above all else. It is honoring my values and principals before anyone and anything else. Dignity is trusting me to say and do what feels true. Than again dignity is knowing that we are all equal to any other person. We are just as deserving of respect, dignity, and success as well as happiness and love and appreciation as anyone else.

Although respect can be part of someone’s dignity, I believe appearance is well apart of one’s dignity as well. Appearance is very important because it is how we look and impress overall another person. For instance; having a clean house is particularly important to everyone in terms of maintaining their dignity and self respect. Image is how look at others in everyday life. Appearance is also the sense of style we wear to have a great image. Overall, it is how many people stand, or sits in the chair whether, if it’s sitting up straight or slouching. Some people may change their appearance at times because they feel they don’t fit in. Others pretend to be something they truly aren't. No matter which way you look at it, if you try to act like someone your not, than you have no dignity in yourself. For example; I pick out a quote for you to read that well represents Greg Mortenson. (“ I told him truthfully that I had never seen Dr. Greg take a drink, and that he was a married man, who respected his wife and children and would never Eve-tease any Balti girls.” page 198 Mortenson ).

For instance, dignity also comes with or how we carry ourselves as a person. This comes in many different ways. The way you conduct yourself in public, body language, and loudness is part of someone’s dignity. Dignity is liking yourself, for the most part, as who you are. In behaving positively towards others, we also are reinforcing our own positive self image. If we are treating others with disrespect and without dignity, then we are lowering our own self image and telling the world how we feel about ourselves. This is how we carry ourselves in every day lives and for the most part this is king of an idea of the word dignity defined.

As people can see there are many different example of dignity, self- respect and appearances, and as well as how we carry ourselves life in general. These are the top 3 most important values of dignity. Why? Because it shows who you are as a person. If others prefer to be around you or not. No one wants to be around a rude and grumpy uneducated person. Dignity is based and determine on body language, attitude and also the way we dress is part of our dignity. Greg Mortenon carried himself with good dignity even though at times he was not in the best situation. He tried his hardest to do all he can for these people he had not known very long. Despite that Greg Mortenson was a stranger but he stayed strong, positive, and proud to what he had become to be to these people. This showed that Greg is an encourage man to those human being lives. He surely represented himself as dignity and in a good manner. Greg had a lot of self respect towards himself and to another well being.

Introduction to Analysis

On April 21, 2010, our english class 098 were taught the ability to analysis and do critical thinking of another author story. One which, was in our book steps to writing well “what is poverty”. This piece was a homework assignment to do two summary of one that was objective, and the other that was response and reflection of a subjective summary. However, my chosen piece will have the difference of what a objective and subjective summary is about. First, will show what the story was about based on facts only, than it will be a subjective summary that will give my own opinion and point of view on the summary “what is poverty”. The strength in this assignment was that I understood the importance of the difference and it has help me to do critical thinking and to write analytically.

"What is Poverty"

Objective

The Crisis of a young mother in need of help written by author Jo Goodwin Parker. The explanation of a young lady eyes suffering to keep her family alive. A woman describes there is nothing for herslef and the children. Or possible a young child, she describes she is very young, but how young. A teen mother who gives more and more examples of what poverty is. There is no hot water or little nutrient and very poor human resources are no longer needed. Poverty is lack of hunger and no shelter. This is of many faces in the world. We have poverty everywhere from place to place, home from home. This is a young teen mother who is humble and vulnerable. Her instinct tells her she may never get help, but she gopes the extra mile to do all she can do to get the help. When she finally arrivals to get help, she is told to wait. Wait for what ? how long? So they could suffer more and more every day with no supply that is needed. Theirs no income to survive only just enough to make for the little needs the children has to have.

Subjective

What i have to say about poverty. I never thought of how bad it could really be until i have read these couple of pages. This made me think a lot of what people go threw every day of there lives. While, I was reading how this young woman and children live, i come to think how they are still survivors in my heart and how i could help them. How could a husband just abdomen them like that. How could this happen and why? how little resources a young possible teen could have little or no human resources. I do not like how these little babys suffer everyday. So many questions, but no answers. These are people that may have anxiety to asking for help. People that probably go through depression, stress and lots more in their life then i could ever imagine. What can we do to help those people in need besides judging. How sad that one could be so silent, but one that has many things in life are not silent why? because maybe it never cross there mind they could be in that same situation. Well think again anyone can be in this same woman's shoes one day. I'm just glade that i have what i need even though it may not be alot to others. Just remember not to judge because you don't know who you may be sitting next to next time.

Introduction to "Writer's Choice"

The last was “Writer’s Choice” which was one of my seminar that I decide that was well represented by one of the books, I read in this class. It was one of many seminar we did in class on May 12,2010. However, my choice will be based on a theme of hope that reflected the book. This piece was one of many that were very important because we had to write down quotes from the book we reading at the time. Than write a brief paragraph of what we thought it meant to us as readers. Seminar’s has help me to understand the words, and their definition and comprehend the quotes that were chosen from the book. Although this quarter their was much to gain by learning many skills, seminars has been a big part in this class and has help to utilized my skills.

Seminar 6

Susceptible (page 3)- Easily imposed; prone; vulnerable

Impediments (page 4) - Something that impedes; a hindrance or obstruction.

Reservation (page 43)- A tract of land set apart by the federal government for a special purpose, especially one for the use of a Native American people.

Quote 1 - You've been fighting since you were born," he said. "you fought off that brain surgery. You fought off those seizures. You fought off all the drunk and drug addicts. other people have hope." (Sherman Alexie page 43)

This stood out for me because for a young boy to struggle throughout his life to fight off his health issues and had made it that far was outstanding in my eyes. To overcome all that, that meant he could overcome anything that comes his way. He fought the seizer and all the bad around him, now it was time for him to fight for a better life.

quote 2- " I want to go to Readan, " I said again. I couldn't believe I was saying it. For me, it seemed as real as saying, " I want to fly to the moon." ( page 46 Sherman Alexie)

Junior ( is a Native American budding cartoonist who leaves his school on the Spokane Indain Reservation to attend an all- white high school.) was starting to make the first step of changing his life for the best. He could't believe that he was saying this because he never thought that he would be the first to leave the reservation from his family. He was in shock to make a huge step. this was going to change his life from here on out.

Quote for picture- Getting to school was always an adventure. After school, I'd ride the bus to the end of the line and wait for my folks. If they didn't come I start walking, hitching in the opposite direction.( Sherman Alexie pf 87)

Pictures in the book showed junior daily on how he got to and from school. it showed what kind of boy he really was, indeed he had hope for himself. No matter what it took to get to school he did it. If it can down to walking a mile from home, or hitchhiking he did it. Junior has lots of encouragement and determination to get where he was going. It not only showed determination but has made a change in the family cycle. This meant that nobody would ever think of going to a school out of the reservation. This was not even close to what anyone could ever do on the reservation. (Ellen Forney pg 88)
